PONTE VEDRA BEACH — Vijay Singh has announced a comeback of his own, explaining that Tiger Woods cannot return to golf without first acknowledging the only rivalry that matters to Vijay Singh.

“I was always Tiger’s biggest rival,” Singh said. “Phil was entertaining. Ernie was pleasant. I was the threat.”

Singh’s preparation reportedly begins at 4:11 a.m., when he hits balls into darkness and trusts that the fairway knows its responsibilities.

He estimates that he has hit 1,700 balls a day since 2004 specifically for this moment. Asked whether that suggested he had never actually stopped playing, Singh said reporters were getting distracted by chronology.

A reporter mentioned Tiger’s frequent victories. Singh nodded. “Exactly. Rivalry.”

At press time, the range had requested a second delivery truck. Singh asked whether the first one was coming back.
