AUGUSTA, Ga. — Phil Mickelson has raised his claimed driving distance to 500 yards and promised to demonstrate it at the Masters, creating an immediate administrative problem for several neighboring properties.

“I can still drive it 500,” Mickelson said. “I’ll prove it at the Masters.”

The announcement came in a 14-minute video devoted to coffee, calf strength and what he called neurological intent. Nobody had asked for the video. Everyone received it.

Mickelson declined to specify whether the 500 yards included rollout, elevation changes, a generous cart path or the ball’s journey home.

“The number is the number,” he said, before adding that conditions would have to be right and everyone would need to maintain a positive attitude.

Augusta officials began measuring nearby roads. Phil called that a good start.

His team has requested a launch monitor capable of displaying ambition.
