Ernie Els “Monitoring the Situation”
The Big Easy was retired from the conversation until Vijay started talking.
Ernie Els initially insisted that he had no interest in joining golf’s escalating comeback competition. He was enjoying a perfectly normal afternoon, and nobody had yet questioned his place in history.
Then Vijay Singh described himself as Tiger Woods’s biggest rival.
“Well,” Els said, putting down his drink, “we may need to clear some things up.”
Within three hours he had confirmed that he was monitoring the situation, located his clubs and asked whether the range still had room for another unresolved legacy.
Els denied that this amounted to a comeback announcement. He called it “a preliminary assessment of other people’s nonsense.”
His team described the current status as quietly interested. Duval immediately challenged him to Golden Tee.
At press time, Els was still monitoring, but now in golf shoes.
