NORMAN, OK — September 29, 2026 — What began as a supposedly private discussion over the future of Oklahoma football reportedly descended into complete bedlam Tuesday after Kirby Smart, Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin and tennis legend John McEnroe each insisted he should become the Sooners’ next head coach.
Witnesses claim the disagreement began politely, with Smart outlining a recruiting plan and Saban calmly explaining that he had “already fixed this sport three times.”
Then Kiffin reportedly slid a contract across the table containing a salary figure written only as “MORE.”
That was enough for McEnroe.
“YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!” he allegedly shouted before demanding Oklahoma install grass courts beside the indoor practice facility and replace the traditional coaching headset with a courtside microphone.
University officials reportedly lost control of the meeting shortly thereafter.
One source described Smart drawing defensive formations on a whiteboard while Saban erased them, Kiffin attempted to negotiate a contract extension before officially accepting the job, and McEnroe repeatedly challenged everyone in the room to “settle it at the net.”
Oklahoma administrators declined to comment on whether McEnroe is actually under consideration.
They also declined to confirm he isn’t.
