What began as a routine question about Michael Jordan’s signature look became considerably less routine when he was asked why he always wore just one earring.

“Y’all know what it meant,” Jordan said, leaning back in his chair.

The interviewer laughed. Jordan did not.

“We all know what one earring meant in the ’90s.”

Asked whether there was a particular message he had been trying to send, Jordan appeared mildly disappointed that the conversation was still happening.

“I didn’t wear two. I wore one. You think that was an accident?”

A producer reportedly offered to cut the exchange. Jordan requested that they keep it.

“Mike, people are going to interpret that a lot of different ways.”

“People interpreted a lot of things about me. Never stopped ’em before.”

Jordan declined to clarify further, although he did ask the interviewer to repeat the original question so he could give the exact same answer again.

By press time, ESPN had assembled a twelve-person panel to determine what everybody supposedly already knew.
